Truly:
Fast Stories... From Kid Coma By Clancy Carroll
Confusing. I loved Truly's first 45 and ep and had pretty high expectations;
whether I like this LP or not seems to depend on my mood. Formed by Seattle
veterans Hiro Yamamoto (ex-Soundgarden) and Mark Pickerel (ex-Screaming Trees)
along with Robert Roth, Truly seems to want to combine the grandiose experimentation
of late 60's psychedelia with the below the belt punk of the early 90's Seattle
guitar bands. Here's what comes to mind: Alice Cooper's Pretties For You,
Pink Floyd's first LP, The Doors (especially on "If You Don't Let It Die"),
and Hendrix on a bad day. All of these are pretty cool places to work from and
given the right circumstances (bud, lava lamp) could work pretty well, but I
just didn't seems to have the patience to dive right into Fast Stories
head first. "Blue Lights" is stellar, though, and "Leslie's Coughing Up Blood"
is still awesome, but I don't need the keyboards all over the place. Time will
probably prove me wrong and I'll be eating this very page in a few months. Better
check this out if you've got some free time.
