Pop Albums:
Pick of the Week All of the industry attention focused on Capitol this summer has been about
Dave Grohl's new band, the Foo Fighters. However with a lineage that includes
Hiro Yamamoto, the co-founder and bassist of Soundgarden, and Mark Pickerel,
formerly of Screaming Trees, Truly have the Seattle connection working for them,
having released two EP's on Sub Pop. In addition, they have the best pure rock
record so far this year. This 13-song smogasboard of punk, psychedelia, grunge
and the kitchen sink incorporates the fury of rock with stellar musicianship.
It would be difficult to find a cooler transition than the segue from the explosive
"Four Girls" into the dreamy pop tune "If You Don't Let It Die." Fast Stories...
is strangely beautiful in its mind-altering hooks, wonderfully intriguing and
psychedelically hypnotic. But make no mistake about it, when vocalist Robert
Roth screams during the Doors sounding "Angelhead" there is no forgetting this
is a band with a hard-edged Seattle connection.
